They say that it’s easy to connect the dots looking back but impossible to do the same looking forward. In my case, it isn’t hard to see the common thread running through my work and education in design: an interest in learning by doing. Design may be a largely visual field, but I have also found it to be an immensely practical one. I have learnt about letterforms by experimenting with different tools and typography by setting type by hand, about books by binding and websites by writing code.

This practicality lends itself to a rational and logical approach to work. Devising systems, building grids, sourcing materials, finding efficiencies. Whether a book or business card, an identity or infographic, my interest lies in work that communicates and solves problems simply and elegantly.

After the best part of a decade as an in-house graphic designer, working with a lot of nice people on a variety of interesting projects, I decided it was time for a change. Completing an MA in Typeface Design enabled me to further develop my typographic knowledge and instilled a belief that I could carve out a niche of my own. I have now started my own practice, developing new typefaces while also helping a range of clients with their graphic design, and am once again finding satisfaction in learning by doing, navigating the practicalities of running a small business.

It's easy to see how the dots have connected to get me here, but who knows what the future might hold. I hope to continue working with nice people on interesting projects, weaving together the different elements of my practice — graphic design, typeface design and letterpress printing — in exciting new ways.
